On August 9th, Parkway Craft Center and the National Park Service once again join together to sponsor the Fifth Annual Heritage Day at Moses Cone Memorial Park. Located at milepost 294 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Colonial Revival Manor House is situated on 3600 acres and provides a beautiful backdrop for the planned activities. This annual event has gained popularity through the years and is a favorite in Blowing Rock.
Multiple craft demonstrations, music, story telling, children’s games, wildlife and carriage exhibits and tours of the second floor of the manor house are scheduled between 10 am and 4 pm. Your only admission price is to have fun and enjoy the events planned for you.
Craft demonstrators are members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and provide a glimpse of the process of creating heritage crafts. Demonstrating are Susan Taylor, basket making, Lee Entrekin, Native American Flute making and playing, both from Old Fort, NC and Tom Turner, hand carved birds of prey, from Boone, NC. All three are masters at their craft. They are delightful to talk to and will be happy to share their secrets.
Musicians serenading throughout the day are Steve and Ruth Smith of Boone, NC, playing mountain music on the hammered dulcimer and guitar, Lee Entrekin taking time from his demonstration to play his hand-made Native American Flutes, and the Forget-Me-Nots of Valle Crucis, NC, a delightful group of 3 girls playing fiddle and accompanied by their father on guitar.
Orville Hicks and Glenn Bolick, both popular and famous story tellers, return to tell tall tales. Both men are locals and tell stories passed down from generations. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear their tales.
Other things to do during the day are:
· Folk dancing
· Bobbing for apples
· Word games
· A scavenger hunt
· Playing with folk toys and other games
· Art table at the carriage house
· Cloth dyeing with blueberries
· 2 walking tours given by rangers
· Tours of the second floor of the
manor house at 10, 11, 2, 3, and 4.
