On Thursday, June 5, the Appalachian Women’s Fund is hosting its inaugural Women of Vision event featuring Liz Murray. The day will begin at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock where the award-winning movie “Homeless to Harvard” will be shown. This movie depicts the true-life story of Liz Murray as she struggles to survive as a homeless teen. She overcomes adversity and all odds to achieve an education from Harvard University.
Doors open at the Hayes Center at 9:00 a.m. with coffee, croissants, and conversation. The movie begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. Following the movie about her life, Ms. Murray will be the recipient of the first annual “Women of Vision” award. She will then speak about her experiences and answer questions from the audience. Reservations to the morning portion of the event are $50 and advance reservations are a must. Seating is limited.
The second half of the event begins at 12:15 p.m. at the nearby Blowing Rock Country Club. Attendees will be bidding on a fabulous array of purses at the silent auction while enjoying libations and hors d’oeuvres. A seated luncheon will follow at which time Liz will speak “up close and personal” followed by a lively auction featuring “Girls’ Getaway Trips”.
Reservations for the movie and luncheon combined are $150 and must be purchased in advance. Luncheon tables accommodate nine guests. Patrons purchasing full tables at $1,575.00 will receive premier seating.
This event is 100% underwritten by sponsors allowing all reservation and auction revenue to go directly to assist women through Appalachian Women’s Fund. AWF is a philanthropic and grant making organization run by women for women that supports women’s programs in Ashe, Avery, and Watauga counties as well as the surrounding rural communities.
