Saturday, May 24th will be a special day for Blowing Rock Appearance Advisory Commission (BRAAC) members and friends.
The morning will begin with a special honors ceremony for the late Bill Koerschner, founder of BRAAC and its leader for many years.
Things will get down and dirty after that as BRAAC members, friends and supporters turn out with garden glove and tools to begin the traditional “Spring Planting of the Town”. That means, in a nutshell, thousands of plants and bulbs from one end of downtown to the other.
Once the plants are in the ground - its a waiting game, at least for those who limit their enjoyment to viewing only. For many BRAAC members and friends, a bit of nurturing will be necessary - to make sure weeds do take over and that the sensitive plants have plenty of water and nutrients to make it through the autumn season.
That process also involved Perry Davis, Blowing Rock’s landscape specialist and merchants and employees along Main Street, many of who use their own initiative to water and support the plants health.
“We have more plants to put in the ground than ever before, so we need all the help we can muster,” said Genie Starnes, BRAAC Chair. ‘For those who enjoy gardening, flowers, being out in the warm sunshine or just playing in the dirt, Planting Day is the event for you.”
Joining BRAAC and Perry Davis will be master gardener Graeme Justice who will double check volunteers on which end of the plant to put underground.
The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. in front of Town Hall and everyone is invited.
