Mrs. Mauney

Catherine H . Mauney, age 101, a resident of Covenant Village in Gastonia, N.C., died March 24 at her residence.
Mrs. Mauney was born in Conover, N.C. on December 14, 1906, a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Franklin L. Herman. She was educated in Catawba County at the Free School Concordia College and graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1929.
After teaching school for a year, she married Carl Fisher Mauney in 1930 and they settled in his hometown of Kings Mountain, N.C.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, and faithfully served God and her church. Mrs. Mauney was a full time homemaker, an active member of Kings Mountain Garden Club, the Kings Mountain Woman’s Club, and the Home Arts Club. For over 78 years she was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, serving on the Altar Guild and the Woman of the Church and as a Sunday School and Bible Study Teacher.
Mrs. Mauney was an extraordinary gardener, growing a bounty of fruits and vegetables for family and friends, however her celebratory events to family, friends, and the community.
In 1993 Mrs. Mauney sold her home in Kings Mountain and moved to Covenant Village, a retirement community in Gastonia, where she has enjoyed living and earning the respect and honor of being the oldest and most admired resident.
Mrs. Mauney is survived by two sons, Herman Mauney of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Charles Mauney and wife, Lynne, of Blowing Rock; one daughter, Kay Berkeley and husband Bill, of Spartanburg, S.C. nine grandchildren, Carl, Charles, Cathy, Kaki, Carla, Leigh, Stephen, Beth and Jon; and 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Carl F. Mauney, a daughter-in-law, Emily Fisher Mauney, and grand daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hockaday Mauney.
A memorial service for Mrs. Mauney will be held on Saturday, April 5 at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain. Officiating will be the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat and the Rev. David Lohr.
Visitation will follow the service.
Entombment will be a private family service at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
