Rime Ice Removal From the Mile High Swinging Bridge

Grandfather Mountain Top Shop Manager Thomas Huskins does his best Wednesday morning to remove rime ice from the Mile High Swinging Bridge. A combination of lots of moisture (2.85 inches of rain the day before) and freezing temperatures (20 degrees was the low) caused the ice to thickly cover the top of Grandfather. The Mountain, however, was able to open all the way to the top shortly after noon on Wednesday, March 5th.

Blowing Rock Foundation Awards Stevens Scholarship To Ashley Shore

The Blowing Rock Community Foundation has awarded six scholarship to students preparing themselves for college or university studies.
The Stevens Scholarship for up to $10,000 a year was awarded to Ashley Shore. That scholarship is provided through the Foundation by Ginny and David Stevens of Blowing Rock.

WAMY Names Lisa Redman As Director Of Development

Angela Miller, Executive Director of WAMY Community Action, Inc., announced that the agency has been awarded a grant by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. The grant will be used fund a Development Director (DD) position for one year. The DD will work towards organizational capacity building, program sustainability and staff development, according to Miller. “The grant from Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation will give us additional resources to research funding opportunities, apply for grants, facilitate Board, staff and volunteer development, create a strategic plan, and raise funds for our new Community Support Center.”

Athletes Take Their Talent To Distant Lands Where They Show Well In International Competition

ZAP Fitness, the Blowing Rock based training complex for training national athletes, took a strong field of their talented runners to Europe to compete with other world class athletes. The American team picked up the 1st place team title as well as a number of other strong performances in a stiff competition.
