Mr. Greene
Mr. Peter Sharpe Greene, age 74, of 701 Plummer Drive, Greensboro, a native and former resident of Blowing Rock, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
Mr. Greene was born January 27, 1934 in Blowing Rock, a son of the late Robert Lee Greene and Nettie Sharpe Greene.
After graduating from Blowing Rock High School in 1951, he entered the US Air Force and served his country for over eight years including time in Korea. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1955-1957) and earned his BS degree in 1963 and MA degree in 1965 from Appalachian State University.
He was a Social Studies teacher at Grimsley High School (1963-1980), and Assistant Principal at both Dudley High School (1980-1993) and Eastern Guilford High School (1993-1995).
Mr. Greene was an active member of First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock and Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro. At Friendly Avenue Baptist Church he organized Troop 104 and was Scoutmaster for several years. He was also a former member of Hamilton Lakes Civitan Club.
After retiring, he enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time with his wife at their cabin in Blowing Rock. He was an active member of the North Carolina Retired School Personnel at local, district, and state levels. For many years he was a precinct worker in Greensboro and was also involved in the North Carolina Teacher Fellowship Program.
Mr. Greene is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Jane Lassiter Greene of the home; one son, Hal Lassiter Greene of Greensboro; one daughter, Nettie Elizabeth Greene McKee and husband Frank of Delray Beach, Florida; two granddaughters, Taylor Jane and Amy Lynn McKee; one sister, Mary Caroline Greene Robbins of Hickory, and one brother, Reverend Robert "Pug" F. Greene and wife Mary of Blowing Rock. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dr. Ben Greene.
A memorial service for Mr. Peter Sharpe Greene was conducted Saturday morning, February 2, 2008, at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church in Greensboro. Military graveside rites and burial were conducted Saturday afternoon, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Mrs. Marsh
Mrs. Johnsie Phifer Tarlton Marsh, 93, of Marshville, N.C., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at Autumn Care in Marshville.
She was born May 17, 1914 in Anson County, a daughter of the late Luther B. and Mary Maske Phifer.
Survivors include sons, Edwin Tarleton and wife, Shirley, of Glendale Springs, N.C., Cullie Tarleton and wife, Sylvia, of Blowing Rock, N.C., Douglas Tarlton and wife, Judy, of Mooresville, N.C., and Neal Tarleton and wife, Lynne, of Matthews, N.C.; step-daughters, Bonnie Avery and husband, Lewis, of Monroe, and Nancy Crump and husband, Junior, of Marshville; sisters, Grady Preslar, Rachel Allen and Alice Caudle, all of Peachland; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was widowed first by Julian C. Tarlton and second by Hoyle L. Marsh. She was preceded in death by sisters, Ellie Phifer, Alma Newton, Ophelia Caudle, Edna Clark and Margie Thomas; and a brother, Carl Phifer.
A funeral to celebrate the life of Mrs. Marsh was held Saturday, Feb. 2, at the 1st Baptist Church with interment in the Marshville City Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the 1st Baptist Church Building Fund or to the choice of the donor.
The Morgan and Son Funeral Home is serving Marsh family.
Mrs. Turner
Mary Louise Williams Turner, a former resident of Blowing Rock, died Saturday, February 2, 2008.
Ms. Turner was born in Los Angeles, California on October 10, 1920. She was raised in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, where her family remains firmly established.
She attended Appalachian State Teacher’s College. She worked tirelessly throughout her life at her passion for accounting figures. Her memorable carreer accommplishments included work for Hanes/Sara Lee, Wake Forest University Athletic Office, Bobbitt Drug Store, the Tobacco Market of Winston-Salem, Jefferson Standard and the NC Employment Commission.
Her greatest work in life was doing the Lord’s work and helping people. Her whole focus in life was to help people. She mainly worked throughout the last 60 years in Highland Presbyterian Church. She was a very active member there serving in many aspects of the church life in finance, choir, memorial garden, circles, and the making and feeding of countless meals and property.
She married Jefferson Allen Turner on December 15, 1945 and was a good wife and mother to her two children. She was a good friend and neighbor to all.
Those preceding her in death include her husband, Jefferson Allen Turner; parents, Cameron A. and Eunice Williams; and brothers, James and Bill. Williams.
Surviving are a brother, Dr. Ernest C. Williams of Blowing Rock and Gastonia; two daughters, Mary Cameron Turner of Winston-Salem, NC and Sarah Kay Turner Rodina of Prospect, KY along with her husband, Mark Lee Levdahl; two grandsons, Von Anthony Rodina and wife, Lacie of Minneapolis, MN; and Michael Cameron Levdahl of Prospect, KY; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, February 16th at Highland Presbyterian Church on Cloverdale Ave. in Winston-Salem.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be sent to: Highland Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem, ear-marked for “The Memorial Garden Fund” in the name of Louise Turner.
Mrs. Blume
Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Blume, age 85, of Shawnee Ridge Circle, The Woodlands, Texas, a former resident of Blowing Rock, died Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Herman Memorial Hospital in The Woodlands.
Mrs. Blume was born October 14, 1922 in Wittenburg, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Lawrence A. and Tressie White Crouch. She was a homemaker and a member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock.
Mrs. Blume is survived by one daughter, Barbara B. McKeon and husband Jimmie of The Woodlands; one granddaughter, Lara Tonelli and husband Mike; two great-grandsons, Michael Tonelli and Christopher Tonelli, and one great-granddaughter, Catherine Tonelli, all of San Deigo, California, and two brothers, L.A. Crouch of Greer, South Carolina, and Vernon Crouch of Macon, Georgia
Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Francis Blume will be conducted today, Thursday, February 7, at 11:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o'clock. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.
The family will receive friends Thursday morning, from 10:30 until 11:00 o'clock, at the chapel, prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
