Decision On Globe Project Is Anticipated By March
A decision on the Globe Project is still several weeks away, according to the U.S. Forest Service ranger who will make the decision.
Joy Malone, ranger with the Grandfather District, said she is still reviewing comments made during a second public comment period for the controversial project, which would grant logging rights to the private timber industry and provide for the construction of new logging roads. The plan also includes herbicide use on the 212 acres covered in the forest management plan. The original proposal of 231 acres was scaled back slightly after public concern was expressed during the first public comment period last summer.

The Making Of Jessie
Our update on the making of Jessie shares the news that the beautiful work of art by sculptor Cantey Tomlinson Kelleher has been completed and is ready to leave for the foundry. The lifesize statue of a precious little girl reading her favorite book will grace the front lawn of the Blowing Rock Community Library, a tribute to Cantey’s aunt, Grace Carr, a loyal and dedicated volunteer and librarian at the library for years prior to her death in September of last year.

Grandfather Mountain Installs New Wind Gauge Equipment At Mile High Swinging Bridge Summit
Installing a wind gauge atop Grandfather Mountain’s Mile High Swinging Bridge is no breeze.
Nonetheless, staff members mounted an anemometer on top of one of the bridge’s I-beams last Monday. On Jan. 24, 2006, the mountain’s old anemometer, located on the roof of the “Top Shop,” the aptly titled gift store at the top of the mountain, recorded wind speeds of at least 200 miles per hour.

Peanut Butter Salmonella Outbreak
Appalachian District Health Department, in partnership with NC Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is issuing a public health advisory regarding the outbreak of Salmonella/Tennessee that has been linked to the brands, “Great Value” and “Peter Pan” peanut butter with product code number beginning with “2111”. To date, there have been 288 confirmed cases nationwide and 39 states have been involved, including North Carolina
