Grandfather Mountain Loses Nola From Their Family Of Otters
Nola the otter passed away May 24 after a sudden illness. The habitat staff at Grandfather Mountain noticed the otter wasn’t feeling well and took her to the veterinarian the day before.
Nola arrived at Grandfather ten years ago along with Chuckie the otter, who passed away in 2001. The pair had been named after the Nolachuckie River. Although Nola’s exact age wasn’t known, otters typically live 12 to 15 years in captivity.
The staff members at Grandfather remember Nola as a very laidback otter who was reserved with the other otters but sweet with the staff.
Grandfather Mountain now has three otters, one female and two males. These three will continue to be on display at Grandfather and the habitat staff has no set plans at this time to get an additional otter.
