Volunteers Can Sign-Up To Assist Visitors To Main Street Museum
Ever since the founding of the little Blowing Rock Pictorial History Museum in 1996, a number of residents have shared their love for the village by volunteering at the Museum. “More than 50 volunteers have worked there in the past 10 years,” said Ginny Stevens, Chairman of the Museum which is operated by the Blowing Rock Historical Society. “This gift of time and sharing their love for the village, has greatly benefited the village by allowing visitors to see some of the special historical elements that have made this town so unique, as well as meeting a friendly face who will chat with them about Blowing Rock,” Mrs. Stevens continued.
“Our volunteers work in the Museum from May to December each year on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons (1:00-4:00 pm) greeting guests and telling about the village. It is especially gratifying to have our guests tell us how special this town is, and how they are thrilled that we have been able to keep its unique character,” said Mrs. Stevens. “For most of us, it is a joy to share our pleasure in being able to live in this special place, and the short time commitment of three or four afternoons during the summer to work at the Museum seems like we are giving back a little bit of the pleasure we are able to enjoy all year long”, she said.
Museum volunteers are ambassadors for the town, and usually contribute three or more afternoons to greeting visitors. Each spring, the volunteers come with their calendars and sign up for the days they would like to work.
The Historical Society welcomes new volunteers, and offers a short training course before they begin their volunteer service. The special trait that all our volunteers share is their desire to tell others about this wonderful village and answer questions or just make the Museum guests feel welcome in our town.
Museum Volunteer Sign-up Day will be Wednesday, May 2, at 3:30 pm at the Meeting Room in Town Hall. Returning volunteers are urged to come with their calendars to sign up and new volunteers will be heartily welcomed! For questions or more information, please call Ginny Stevens – 295-3021.
