Local Chefs To Slice And Dice For Charity
Culinary bragging rights for the next 12 months will be on the line when local chefs go toque to toque in the Fire on the Rock Chef’s Challenge, Saturday, April 14 at the Mariam and Robert Hayes Performing Art Center. The “Iron Chef” style competition is part of the Second Annual Blue Ridge Wine Festival (April 12-15), and the “combatants” from Best Cellar, Bistro Roca, Crippen’s, Broyhill Inn, Ciao Bello at Meadowbrook Inn and the Manor House Restaurant at Chetola Resort welcome the chance to prove their culinary superiority.

ASU Opera Comes To Blowing Rock
Appalachian State University Opera Theatre, part of the Mariam Cannon Hayes School of Music at ASU has teamed up with the Mariam & Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center, the Blowing Rock Stage Company, and the ASU School of Theatre and Dance to present two operas by Gian Carlo Menotti, The Telephone and The Medium. The program will be presented at the beautiful Mariam & Robert Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock for four performances starting March 29.

April At Grandfather Mountain Brings Dollar Days To North Carolina High Country Citizens
All those that work and reside in the six High Country counties, along with their accompanied guests, are invited to visit Grandfather Mountain for $1 during the month of April with proof of local employment or residency.
The special April Dollar Days $1 admission is offered to residents and those working in the six counties represented by the NC High Country Host regional travel promotion organization: Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and Wilkes. The discount is also extended to students of colleges and universities in the High Country and to guests traveling in the same vehicle with those eligible for the April discount. Please present a drivers’ license, college ID, or local utility bill as proof of High Country residency. An employee identification badge or pay stub can be used to show employment at a High Country business.

Art Center And Stage Company To Merge Boards
The boards of the Blowing Rock Stage Company and the Blowing Rock Community Arts Center Foundation have worked together to create a regional center for the performing arts since 2001. That dream culminated in the construction and opening of the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock in August, 2006.

Researchers Team To Find A New Location Of Hibernating Virginia Big-Eared Bats On Lofty Grandfather Mountain
A recent exploration of a cave on Grandfather Mountain has delighted scientists with the discovery of 55 hibernating Virginia Big-Eared Bats. The bat, whose only North Carolina location is Avery County, is on the state and federal endangered species lists.
