Blowing Rock Hospital Will Send Team To Relay For Life

“Come join Blowing Rock Hospital in the walk to fight cancer.” That is an invitation from Jennifer Bretz, Community Liaison Officer at Blowing Rock Hospital, who has organized an energetic team to participate in the 2007 Relay for Life.
“We are so excited to be a part of this important cause,” says Bretz, Captain of the hospital Relay for Life team. “Being a community hospital, we understand the need for cancer research. Cancer affects most everyone. Whether you or a family member have or have had cancer or work with someone who has cancer, this disease surrounds us. Hopefully, our fundraising efforts will contribute to the research effort to help in the defeat of cancer.”
Statistics show that 1 in every 3 people have some form of cancer in their lifetime. About 1,500 people are lost to cancer every single day. Watauga County was the number one Relay for Life fundraising community for its population group in the entire United States for five years. In 2000 and 2006, it was number two.
Government funding for cancer research is being cut more and more each year, yet cancer is still the leading cause of death in Americans under the age of 85. Therefore, the American Cancer Society must rely on private citizens to continue the fight against cancer. Through involvement, education, and fundraising communities all over the United States work together to provide research, advocacy and services to help cancer patients face their battle in order to find a cure for cancer.
The Blowing Rock Hospital Relay for Life team, The Blowing Walkers, consists of 13 members from many different departments in the hospital including Administration. All members have specific responsibilities in order to reach their goal for the American Cancer Society.
“We encourage everyone in the community to get involved. Together, we can make a difference,” says Jennifer.
