Elliott Daingerfield’s 148th Birthday Celebration To Benefit Edgewood Cottage Restoration Fund
Elliott Daingerfield was 31 years old when he knew that Blowing Rock was where he wanted to paint, teach and build a home for his seasonal residence.
In 1888 he bought the land on the corner of South Main Street and Chestnut Street, and started thinking of his future summers here. He loved the beauty and tranquility of the village, as well as the marvelous vistas, sunsets, and subjects for his painting career. In 1890 he built Edgewood Cottage, and now the Historical Society is in the process of restoring the cottage, which will soon stand proudly again as a part of the rich heritage of the art and history in our town.
On March 24, 2007 The Blowing Rock Historical Society is throwing a party to celebrate his birthday at his third home in Blowing Rock, The Westglow Spa and Resort. The elegant dinner in Rowland’s Restaurant will follow a wine and gathering period, and will include a choice of entrees of Asian Rubbed Roasted Lamb, Sauteed Rainbow Trout, or Penne Pasta with a Goat Cheese Cream Sauce. The multi course dinner will be served with the elegance that has become the standard at Westglow, and will end with birthday cake and a champagne toast to the artist that has been an inspiration for a century of local art work by painters of the region.
Invitations were mailed to Historical Society members and others who have supported the restoration of Edgewood Cottage in February and the list of attendees is quickly filling the limited spaces requirements. After questions from some who did not receive invitations, The Historical Society felt it important to share the news of this fund-raising benefit with the community so that others who were not Society members might join us to help celebrate Mr. Daingerfield’s life in Blowing Rock.
The cost of the evening is $125 per person, with $75 of that amount being a tax deductible donation. If you would like to be included please call Ginny Stevens – 828-295-3021 or Carole Miller – 265-3064 by Sunday, March 19th, the last day that reservations may be received.
