A Busy February At The Mariam & Robert Hayes Performing Art Center
For a village that not too many years ago would find going to the grocery store a much anticipated activity in February - the dead of winter when most citizens went into hibernation until the first snowmelt in April, its a totally new lifestyle now - with so many activities its hard to descide just what you want to enjoy.
Gone are the vacant parking spaces of winter. Gone are the living with the TV or restricting activities to the warm confines of the home, and gone are the days when every other store on Main Street was boarded up for the winter.
From festivals to special events, winter is not what it used to be in Blowing Rock!
For example, the arrival of the Mariam and Robert Hayes Performing Art Center has made the winter months a brand new ballgame - for adults and children. Its become a priority destination for both entertaining and education.
In February:
√ Almost daily young people are coming and going from classes and rehearsals as part of the TOPs program for children and the activities of the Rocket Youth Players.
√ Seldom does a week go by when the Hayes Center isn’t hosting a special group or gathering - from the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation to the Watauga County Arts Council and from weddings and receptions to special meetings and programs.
√ Movies, movies, movies... eleven of them: Already fans have enjoyed Grand Hotel, Going My Way, An Ameerican in Paris, My Fair Lady and The Godfather, and tonight, February 8 the series continues with The Godfather II. Still on the February calendar are Out of Africa (12th), Sleepless in Seattle and Roman Holiday (14th), Forrest Gump (26th) and the classic Gone With The Wind (28th).
√ Special performances by the ASU Hayes School of Music: An Evening of String Chamber Music on the 13th, the ASU Chamber Orchestra on the 19th, and Jazz Ensemble II on the 25th.
√ Live performances and concerts: The hit bluegrass musical group The Gibson Brothers on the 10th, and An Evening With Groucho on February 23rd.
