Deadline Approaching For Applicants For Scholarship Assistance From Foundation
Blowing Rock students continuing their education beyond high school, or those planning to enroll in a college, university or community/technical school, are reminded that the deadline for applying for assistance thought the Blowing Rock Community Foundation is just around the corner.
“We will again in 2007 award four $1,000 scholarships,” said Sandy Miller, President of the Foundation.
“Our mission to provide financial assistance to young people furthering their education is in keeping with our charter and has been made possible through the generosity of our donors.”
The Scholarship Program is one of two funding objectives of the Community Foundation, the other being financial support to Blowing Rock service agencies and projects and programs that benefit the citizens of Blowing Rock as a whole. Like the Scholarship program, charitable and non-profit agencies must request the funding assistance before they can be considered.
“It is because of the support we received from our residents that we are able to again match our allocations for scholastic assistance to students,” Mrs. Miller said. “Along with the awarding of four $1,000 scholarships, we believe these gifts to be a reward for hard work and success by the students who apply and are granted financial assistance.
Applications for the awards are limited to Blowing Rock students who plan to continue their education at a community college, technical school or college or university. The scholarships, as always, will be awarded based equally on merit and need.
The criteria that qualifies students for consideration for a Foundation scholarship, is:
• Must be a student, or will enter in the fall of 2007, a community college, technical school, or a two/four year college or university.
• Must have lived and continue to live in the Blowing Rock School District.
• Must have attended Watauga High School for a minimum of two years.
• Must have a high school grade point average of 2.5 or better.
• Must submit an application which will include the following:
Statement of goals, for the future - academic as well as personal and professional.
Statement of academic and extracurricular activities.
Statement of financial information and need.
The Foundation stresses that the scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit (grades, initiative, physical vigor, leadership, and character) and need (family resources and income, other siblings in college, family circumstance, other available financial aid, and any other relevant information).
The Scholarship Applications are available at the Guidance Office at Watauga High School in Boone or from the Blowing Rock Town Hall. Interviews are scheduled for Saturday, February 24, at Blowing Rock Town Hall.
Completed applications must be mailed to P.O. Box 525, Blowing Rock, N.C. 28605 and be postmarked no later than 5 p.m. on February 2, 2007. To be considered, the application must have all the requested information.
