Gary Lee as Senator Sam
The Blowing Rock Stage Company has brought a lot of famous people to town over the 20 years of producing professional theatre - Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt, Vincent VanGogh, Sherlock Holmes, Henry Ford, Warren G. Harding, Patsy Cline, Thomas Edison, and dozens of others. This past Monday it was Senator Sam Ervin that introduced audiences to the Stage Companyís brand new series presented under the title of ìFlying Soloî. Written by Steve Bouser and Directed by Kenneth Kay, Senator Sam featured a Stage Company favorite professional, Gary Lee Smith in the role of Senator Sam, and as he did in Wait Until Dark, Art, Chapter Two, and Camping With Henry and Tom, he ìnailed itî. So impressive was his performance that fans following the show on Monday night were calling him ìSenatorî instead of Gary. Stage Company officials feel so strongly about the historic work that they have tagged the one-man-show ìThe Ervin Projectî and are looking for underwriters to take the show on the road to share with students learning more about the history of North Carolina and the role this favorite son played not only here in the Tar Heel state but on the national and international scene as Chairman of the Watergate Committee.
