Mr. Sachs

William Ferguson Sachs, age 76, husband of Lillian Lindsay Sachs, died Saturday, April 30 at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina after a long illness.
Mr. Sachs was born October 6, 1928 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Evelyn Gracely Sachs and Edward Julius Sachs.
He attended Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where he later served as Chairman of the Board of Visitors. he graduated from the Citadel in 1951 where he remained an active alumnus, having served as President of the Association of Citadel Men and The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.
He served in the Korean War in the Twenty-fifth Infantry Division, 14th Regiment, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Man's Badge and the Bronze Star.
Mr. Sachs went to work for Home Finance Company in Charlotte, N.C. in 1954, moving to Columbia in 1963. In 1973 he founded First Financial Corporation, where he was Chairman and President until recently.
He was the past President and Director of the South Carolina Financial Services Association and was a past Director and staff member of the University of Colorado National Installment Banking School. He was a member of the committee of several men who first brought Young Life to Columbia.
At the time of his death, he was serving on the South Carolina State Board of Financial Institutions, having been appointed and reappointed by three Governors.
Mr. Sachs was a summer resident of Blowing Rock, making his home on Gideon Ridge Road. He was a member of the Blowing Rock Country Club, as well as the Palmetto Club, Capital City Club in Columbia, and St. John's Episcopal Church of Columbia.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lillian Lindsay Sachs, of the home; one daughter Lindsay Sachs Long and husband Ernest B. Long of Charleston; one son Richard E. Sachs of Columbia; four grandchildren, William F. Sachs III of Columbia; Lily Sachs of Blowing Rock, Elizabeth Long and Bethea Long of Charleston and a step-granddaughter, Caroline Long Parnell.
He was preceded in death by a son William F. (Billy) Sachs Jr., and a brother, Edward Sachs, Jr.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 2 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Columbia. Officiating was the Reverend Fletcher Montgomery. Interment followed in the Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Columbia.

Mr. Earles

Mr. Patrick William Earles, age 86, of 125 Grassy Knoll Way, Blowing Rock, died January 20, 2005 at his home.
Mr. Earles was born March 17, 1918, in Detroit, Michigan, a son of the late John Wilburn and Mary Elizabeth Hush Earles. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired tool and die machinist from Chrysler Corporation's missile program.
He worked for the U.S. Displaced Persons Commission in Germany from 1949 until 1952 and for the Redstone Missile Program in Italy and Turkey from 1959 until 1962.
He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Boone.
Survivors include his wife, Annegret Michaelis Earles, of the home; one daughter, Pamela Williams and husband, Allan, of Lexington, Kentucky; two grandsons, Adam Melton and Trevor Melton, both of Fort Collins, Colorado; and one sister, Mrs. Carrie Kashinsky, of Harrison Township, Michigan.
A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, April 30 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Boone. Officiating was Dr. Ben Edwards.

Mrs. Foster

Mrs. Lyla Barnett Foster, age 82, of Todd, and formerly of Ransom Street Blowing Rock, died Sunday afternoon, May 1 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Foster was born in Wayne County, Mississippi, a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Cochran Barnett. She was a member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughter: Billie Weymouth Foster of Vilas, Cissie Dotson and husband, Denver, of Kernersville, and Julia Foster of Deep Gap; four grandchildren: Stephanie Lee and husband John of Colfax, N.C., Christopher "Kit" Dotson and wife Jo Dee of Johnson City, Tennessee, Kimberly Moody of Deep Gap, and Sherri Moody of Raleigh; seven great-grand children: Aaron Riley, Ian Riley, Kamryn Lee, Taylor Dotson, Abby Dotson, Vanessa Hamilton and Caleb Wise.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Hugh Foster and two sister, Lillian Henderson and Ethel Lanier.
Graveside services and interment for Mrs. Foster was conducted on Tuesday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock. Officiating was Christopher "Kit" Dotson.

Mrs. Osborne

Mrs. Kate Sparks Osborne, age 92, of Sorrento Park Drive, Blowing Rock, wife of the late Samuel Marvin Osborne, died Wednesday, April 27th at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Osborne was born September 20, 1912, in Tacoma, Wise County, Virginia, a daughter of the late John and Josephine Carter Sparks. Mrs. Osborne was a homemaker, gentle mother and dedicated gardener.
She is survived by one daughter, Hope Borovik and husband, Robert Wood, of Blowing Rock; two sons, Wylie Osborne and wife, Hannelore, of Titusville, Florida and Larson Osborne and wife, Linda, of Black Mountain; one brother, George Sparks and wife, Cleo, of Great Mills, Maryland and a brother-in-law, Fred Gibson of Tacoma, Virginia. She is also survived by a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Kyle Osborne and Carson Osborne; a daughter, Helen Osborne Montgomery; two brothers, Alfred Sparks and Bill Sparks and three sisters, Amanda "Mandy" Riner, Lina Gibson and Lizzie Sparks.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 3 at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Cocoa, Florida. Interment followed in Brevard Memorial Park.
Mrs. Osborne was a lover of "living" things, and the family suggests that in her memory a tree, shrub or flower be planted. Memorial contributions may also be made to the Watauga Humane Society, 200 Casey Lane, Boone, N.C. 28605.
